Puffin Wave

McCann Industries Puffin Wave

It is said, quite often that, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." At McCann Industries, we say it a little differently. "No one wants to admit they have ugly children." And this is one of our babies. We think you will love it as if it was your own. It is beautiful, proportioned, balanced, comfortable and useful.

All our knives start life as precision ground flat stock of O1 alloy. When heat-treated properly and drawn to 56 on a Rockwell C Scale they are tough, hard and easy to sharpen. This new design incorporates all our best features from our past. And some we learned from our past experience and use. The "features" we are talking about are nearly perfect balance with just a "slight" forward weight bias. A raised area above and below machined directly into the blade from solid steel so it can't ever come loose, that forms the hilt. The upper portion is serrated with three slots to significantly improve forward thrusting ability with your thumb.

It has a grip that is sculpted and ergonomic with a rounded area below also makes thrusting easy. On the blunt end or pommel is a lanyard hole for easy attachment of 550 cord, small DIA rope or for the traditionalist, "leather".

As you look at the grip end you will notice a downward slope to the grip this is important because as mentioned earlier for thrusting it fills your palm. And when withdrawing or pulling the knife back it allows more force and speed to be applied to this move.

Also when chopping as when preparing food like carrots, celery or onions and garlic, this drop at the butt end will be appreciated. It is easier on your wrist.

Although this shape is artwork, it is a thing of beauty and has purpose as a weapon.

As a weapon, no part you see isn't dangerous. The edge is ground on CNC equipment and has micro serrations built into it. When used as a blunt trauma instrument for striking as with the pommel or with the flat sided strike or slap. Using the back of the blade in a chopping motion across an assailant's wrist, elbow, forehead, knee or bridge of nose to name a few. For come alongs the quillon or hilt can be used to place inside the assailant's nostril or inside the ear channel in the heavier areas of cartilage. Placement of your thumb over the flesh with the hard steel in the airway or depression in the lobe area of the ear, with enough force applied will usually allow you to steer your attacker. Remember, "Where the head goes the body follows."

Beauty? A picture is worth a thousand words….Please take a look.

Grips

Threaded Grip Bushings:

It is easier and cheaper to replace screws and bushings than to repair a hardened tang.

Counter Bored Grip Scales:

Screws don't take shear loads well. Dowels do. That's why gearboxes, engine cylinder heads, brake drums and rotors and many other devices use this application to locate parts securely and accurately.

Micarta Grips:

Chevrolet used this material to drive camshafts in engines for decades.

Parkerized Finish:

Used on American military small arms singe 1917

Debur:

Completely machine deburred first on the CNC.  Then in a vibratory tumbler. Final debur is accomplished with abrasive blasting before parkerizing.
